The Top Safety Pick+ distinction from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is the highest safety award a vehicle can earn in the United States. Five Mazda models have recently earned that honor.

What does it take to win a Top Safety Pick+ title? A vehicle must earn all Good ratings (the top score) in the driver-side small overlap front test, moderate overlap front test, side test, roof strength test, and head restraint test. Further, it must achieve an Advanced or Superior rating for front crash prevention as well as an Acceptable or Good headlight rating.

2017 Mazda CX-9

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 earned Good scores across the board for all necessary tests and achieved a Superior in front crash prevention. It earned an Acceptable for headlights.

2017 Mazda3

As both a hatchback and sedan, the 2017 Mazda3 earned all Goods in testing, a Superior in front crash prevention, and an Acceptable for headlights.

2017 Mazda6

The 2017 Mazda6 sedan scored similarly, earning all Good ratings for all necessary testing, as well as a Superior rating for front crash prevention and an Acceptable rating for headlights.

2017 Mazda CX-3

Mazda's streak continues with the 2017 Mazda CX-3, which earned a Good rating in every required test. The CX-3 also earned the necessary Superior rating for front crash prevention and Acceptable rating for headlights.

2017 Mazda CX-5

The larger 2017 Mazda CX-5 SUV is also safe, with all Good ratings for necessary testing, a Superior rating for front crash prevention, and an Acceptable for headlights.

2018 Models

For 2018, Mazda has continued its safety streak. So far, four models have earned the IIHS's Top Safety Pick distinction. Again, the 2018 Mazda3 earned praise as a hatchback and sedan, while the 2018 Mazda CX-9, 2018 Mazda CX-3, and 2018 Mazda CX-5 also earned Top Safety Pick ratings.
