When you slide behind the wheel of the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata, you'll notice the superior engineering right away - from its zippy and efficient engine performance to its effortless handling on straight highways and winding back roads alike.

Engine and Mechanics

The Mazda MX-5 comes with a SKYACTIV®-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 16 valves and variable valve timing technology. Generating 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque, this engine redlines at 6,800 rpm.  The compression ratio is 13:1, and an electronically controlled fuel injection system optimizes fuel economy. This engine is mated to a SKYACTIV®-MT six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter - perfect for those who love an engaging driving experience - while the available automatic six-speed transmission comes with paddle shifters.

Chassis Design

The Mazda MX-5's chassis is a monocoque unibody system with a backbone frame and front and rear suspension subframes for added articulation. There are disc brakes on all four wheels-11-inch brakes with single-piston calipers, to be exact-and the rack-and-pinion steering is supplemented by a double pinion electric power assist system. The total curb weight of the Miata measures 2,332 pounds with the manual transmission.

SKYACTIV®-VEHICLE DYNAMICS

The Mazda MX-5 includes SKYACTIV®-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control to provide a truly smooth ride and better cornering. This system adjusts the power and shifts the vehicle weight ever so slightly as you turn, reducing engine torque and shifting weight to the front wheels. The effect is subtle yet engaging, providing a smooth feel and better grip. Developed by following the design philosophy of Jinba Ittai, or "horse and rider as one," the goal of the SKYACTIV®-VEHICLE DYNAMICS system is to make your driving experience as responsive and engaging as possible.
